The Vietnamese players made a strong start but missed a number of scoring chances they carved out in both halves.
Striker Van Quyet failed to open the scoring after 16 minutes when he ventured down the ball on the right, escaped the offside trap, and faced the Philippine goalie. Although he defeated goalie Roland Muller, his effort was refused by a Philippine defender.
11 minutes later, Vietnamese players missed another chance to hammer the ball into the back of the net after Van Thang’s close-range kick was denied by goalie Muller.
Manuel Ott put the Philippines ahead on 37 minutes after one of his teammates set up for him to delivere a close-range kick past Goalie Tuan Manh into the empty net.
After the intervals, Vietnam’s chief coach Falko Goetz substituted Hoang Thien and Xuan Hieu for Thanh Trung and Ngoc Anh to reinforce counterattacks.
Goalie Muller performed very well, refusing Vietnamese players’ efforts to score any goal. However, he was defeated by captain Hartmann with his own goal, earning an equalizer for Vietnam.
It was the Vietnamese players again who missed scoring chances until Hoang Thien scored a goal, extending Vietnam’s lead on 73 minutes. Goalie Muller palmed away the ball that met Hoang Thien who was present on time to fulfill his duty.
Striker Van Quyet’s late goal in the extra time set Vietnam up for a 3-1 win over the Philippines.
