Vietnam football hit by row over TV rights

A cameraman recording live a football match in Ho Chi Minh City.

Controversy has broken out regarding television broadcast rights for the Super League (formerly V-League) matches, the country’s top-tier football tournament, with the newly established Vietnam Professional Football (VPF) JSC at loggerheads with the company that has bought the telecast rights.

Vietnamese football had undergone a major change early this month with the task of organizing national football competitions passed on from the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) to the VFP, which has on its board officials of the federation as well as owners of the nation’s football clubs.

Before the mantle passed on to the new company, the VFF had early this year sold television rights to Super League matches to the Audio Visual Global (AVG) JSC. The two sides signed a 20-year agreement for VND6 billion (US$286,000) per year.

Officers of the VPF, which was established early December, found the agreement unreasonable. They wanted to shorten the time and raise the agreement’s value to VND20 billion a year.

AVG has contended that although VPF has the right to organize national football competitions, it cannot unilaterally terminate the agreement or force it to raise the value from VND6 billion to VND20 billion a year.

AVG president Pham Nhat Vu refused to change the terms and conditions in the agreement during a talk with VFF vice chairman Pham Ngoc Vien and general secretary Tran Quoc Tuan (Tuan has since resigned and will leave office on January 1, 2012) on Wednesday, December 28.

Vu said the agreement AVG signed with VFF was guaranteed by officials of the sports department and authorized agencies, so it must remain unchanged for the term agreed to at the beginning.

He said AVG would not agree to the VND20 billion per year that VPF has informed the press it is demanding.

According to Vien, AVG has all rights to air the matches on television as mentioned in the agreement, so VFF can do nothing about it. However, he said, VPF and AVG should discuss the issue and come to an agreement that is beneficial to both parties.

VPF board members are also unhappy that the AVG plans to choose the matches that will be aired live, instead of airing all of them.

Nhat Vu said 40 local television stations have asked for the right to rebroadcast live the football matches that AVG owns the copyrights to, but the company requires that they also show AVG’s logo and advertisements.

Meanwhile, the major television stations in the country, VTV, VTC (Vietnam Cable TV) and Ho Chi Minh City Television (HTV) have not reached agreement with AVG because they are not pleased with the company’s choice of matches to be aired live.

They say this would not only narrow down the areas to be televised but also badly affect the interests of the Super League sponsor, Eximbank. The bank, which invests VND30 billion in the tournament, is entitled to ask that the league matches be broadcast on as many television stations as possible to promote its image.

A source said Wednesday that the VPF Board of Directors still planned to negotiate with broadcasting television stations like VTV, VTC and HTV the possibility of showing matches and images of the Super League as much as possible on their sports channels. The VPF has said it would not accept any company holding exclusive television telecast rights, and would sell them to different TV stations.

According to a member of the VPF’s Board of Directors, if VTV pays for the right to televise live four or five matches of the Super League a week to broadcast on its different channels including VCTV channels and satellite channel K+, VPF can earn up to VND12-15 billion.

The VPF has also said it would support VTV in exploring income earning options through advertising. It would also offer similar deals to VTC and HTV.

It is not clear however, how the VPF can circumvent the VFF-AVG agreement and negotiate these deals.

AVG has exclusive rights to Super League, says VFF

Audio Visual Global (AVG) has the exclusive broadcast rights to all the matches of the Super League for the 2011-2030 seasons.
Audio Visual Global (AVG) has the exclusive broadcast rights to all the matches of the Super League for the 2011-2030 seasons.
This was confirmed by the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) in a document signed by its president Nguyen Trong Hy on December 30.

VFF asked the Vietnam Professional Football JSC (VPF) and organizing boards of all professional football tournaments, namely the national football tournament (Super League 1), the First Division football tournament (Super League 2), the national Football Cup and the Super Cup match to continue implementing the broadcast rights that they signed with AVG in 2012 and the coming years.

Vietnam Television can only broadcast these matches live when it receives permission from AVG, said the document.

Earlier on December 29, VPF stated its rights, allowing VTV and its affiliates to broadcast live and re-broadcast all matches of the above-mentioned tournaments.

However, Nguyen Duc Kien, Deputy Chairman of VPF, said VPF has the rights to organize these tournaments as of 2012 and is the only owner of the broadcast rights. “The contract signed between VFF and AVG has nothing to do with VPF,” he said.

The infamous contract has caused many disputes and some experts said it is unreasonable for VFF to sign a 20-year contract in its 5-year term.

Kien described the contract as illegal, reasoning that it had not receive any agreements from clubs before it was penned by VFF and AVG.

Demba Ba
Demba Ba, who has scored 14 league goals this season, will be fit to play

TEAM NEWS

Liverpool will be without striker Luis Suarez, who serves a one-match ban after accepting an FA improper conduct charge.

Captain Steven Gerrard, who returned from a two-month lay-off on Boxing Day, is likely to again start on the bench.

Newcastle striker Demba Ba is available despite suffering a knock to his knee at Bolton.

Davide Santon has recovered from injury, while Dan Gosling is back after completing a three-match ban.

MATCH PREVIEW

Immediately this fixture conjures up memories of one of the greatest matches of the Premier League era. I was lucky enough to be at Anfield 15 years ago to witness Liverpool's dramatic 4-3 win, a scoreline they recorded again in the corresponding fixture the following season. Robbie Fowler scored four tLiên kếtimes in those two encounters and you can't help thinking how the current Liverpool team could do with the natural finishing and predatory instincts that he possessed.

Liverpool have a fantastic home record against Newcastle - they need to finally convert those chances and make sure that continues

On Boxing Day, I watched them yet again squander chances as they could only draw with Blackburn, and with Luis Suarez suspended for this game, goalscoring will be a concern for the Reds.

Incredibly, the Premier League's bottom two (Blackburn and Bolton) have scored more league goals than Kenny Dalglish's team. In fact, Liverpool have now let slip 12 points at home from nine league matches, and despite being unbeaten at Anfield, they can't afford that to continue. I'm sure the frustration has increased having seen Chelsea and Arsenal drop points at home so far over the holiday period.

It's a little over 12 months since I commentated on Alan Pardew's first match in charge of Newcastle - a 3-1 home win over Liverpool. Many will remember that Andy Carroll was outstanding that day and scored the third goal - Liverpool fans will be hoping he gets a run in their team and rediscovers some of that form as quickly as possible.

While all the talk since his departure has been of a new centre-forward on Tyneside, you have to give immense credit to the way Demba Ba has fitted in. He may not have been the big name most fans were calling for but 14 goals in his last 13 league starts is a record any of their previous strikers would have been proud of.

It's testament to the job that Pardew has done since that first victory that he goes into this match just a point behind Liverpool. Their win at Bolton was vital after a run of only two points from eighteen. Liverpool have a fantastic home record against Newcastle - they need to finally convert those chances and make sure that continues.

Top dancer claims Vietnamese hiphop quality declining

Pham Khanh Linh, 23, one of Vietnam's most talented hip-hop dancers, said the industry in the country has been saturated with non-skilled dancers.

Linh 3T is one of Vietnam's most talented hip-hop dancers

Linh, also known as Linh 3T, was ranked among the top four Asian dancers at the the large event, Redbull BC One 2011, told DTiNews that he pinned hope on a community of professional hip-hop dancers emerging after the recent competition Moscow in November.

Many people say that hip-hop dance has gone down hill since it was first introduced to Vietnam. What do you think about this?

I agree that the quality of hip-hop in Vietnam is declining. The industry has been saturated because of a lack of proper attention to professionalism. I highly appreciate the professionalism of competitions like the “Hanoi Jam All Style Battle”, where dancers have a real chance to compare their skills, which are judged other competent dancers. That’s the reason why I accepted to act as a member of the competition’s jury.

I was on the judge panel for the programme before I attended the Redbull BC One in Russia. The work of a judge is quite difficult. You have to, not only decide the winner, but provide some guidance for the younger dancers to develop their talents.

How has your life changed since you returned to Vietnam from the Redbull BC One 2011?

Since I came back to Vietnam from Russia, I've kept my initial goals. But I do have more friends than after the competition.

Many people think that you are the number one b-boy in the Vietnamese hip-hop scene after you were rated among top 16 b-boys in the world. Is that the reason why you left the Bigtoe crew to set up your own crew?

I do not think that I deserve to be ranked at number one. I’d like to send my gratitude to the audience who supported me. I and 20 other friends had plans to set up a new group before attending the competition in Russia. I didn't leave Bigtoe because I'm "full of myself".

I decided to set up the S.I.N.E or "Saying Is Not Enough" with the aim of devoting all my effort and ambition to dance and validating it as a form of art. When I'm done dancing myself, I plan to begin training the next generation.

What are your expectations for the Vietnamese hip-hop?

I think that any expectation for the whole community should be based individuals. For myself, I will try to become a role model for young dancers. I hope that this will, at least in part, help contribute to the development of a professional hip-hop community in Vietnam.

Linh joined the hip-hop community in 2004 and has won several international prizes, including the first prize at South East Asia’s Freestyle Session in 2011, the second prize at Who is Who, 2011, held in Paris, the second prize at the Hip-hop Session Jam in Berlin and the third prize at the R16 B-boy World Championship 2010 in Seoul.

National coaching council supports the dismissal of German coach

Members of the National Coaching Council agreed with the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF)’s proposal to fire Coach Falko Goetz for U23 football team’s poor performance at the 26th SEAGames.
Goetz sacked

On December 28 the council held a meeting to review the aptitude of Falko Goetz, head coach of the national football team.

However, the council's Deputy Chairman, Le The Tho, along with Duong Ngoc Hung, member of the council, who strongly opposed the council's involvement in the decision did not attend the meeting.

Chairman of the council, Nguyen Sy Hien said, “We have reconsidered the Falko Goetz's style of working and recognise that he is not able to train and lead the U23 team. He has failed in terms of good strategy and made mistakes in assigning players to their proper positions. Because of this, we have decided to go along with the VFF in their decision to terminate his contract."

Hien also advocated the VFF’s plan to search for domestic coaches for U23. Among the candidates are Mai Duc Chung, Le Thuy Hai and Phan Thanh Hung.

Currently Goetz still plans to return Hanoi on January 4, after a holiday with his family in Germany. He showed some surprise upon learning of the meeting to consider his dismissal. But he has yet to comment.

Goetz signed a three-year contract with the VFF in April, 2011. If the VFF terminates his contract, Goetz would receive a considerable amount in compensation.

In related news, leader of VFF officially accepted a letter of resignation from General Secretary Tran Quoc Tuan, even though the VFF Executive Board members turned it down during a meeting on December 22.

Tuan said his decision to resign was not a bow to public pressure after the bad performance of U23 at the 26th SEAGames. He said that his replacement would be able to do a better job for the team and improve Vietnamese football.

The VFF has not yet released any information about candidates for Tuan’s position.
