Some changes to U21 football tournament
A draw will be held to divide Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) teams into six groups, instead of grouping the teams in certain areas like the past years.
After that the hosts of the six groups will be chosen for the qualifying round of the 16th National Under-21 Football Tournament sponsored by Thanh Nien newspaper on September 1-15.
Therefore, the teams may have to travel a lot more than they did before.
The winners of the six groups will advance to the final round, where they will compete with the reigning champs Nam Dinh and the hosts Ninh Thuan from September 25 until October 5.
The national event will be followed by the 6th International contest expected to take place in Pleiku again, from October 13-22.
The organizers are planning to further improve the quality of the annual event by inviting U19 teams from countries with excellent footballers such as Japan and the Republic of Korea.
The football federations of Iran, Thailand and Malaysia still want to send their U21 players to the competition.
The national and international events will be a good opportunity for the coaching staff in Vietnam to select good players for the U22 Asian Football Confederation event and the U23 South East Asian Games in 2013.
